The Constituent Assembly approves the Constitution
Yesterday, the 30th of september of 1791, the Constituent Assembly approved the Constitution they had been debating about this past months.
The third estate had created some time ago an asembly called ‘National Assembly’ and since then they have been fighting for the creation of a constitution and for a new voting system, which consists of everyone having an individual vote. The constitution was approved in the Tennis Court Oath, in Paris. They met there because the King did not let them meet legally. Our King Louis XVI gathered the Estates and they debated for a while but they did not come to an agreement, so the third estate revealed against the King. The third estate and some members from the clergy and the nobility formed a new assembly called 'National Consituent Assembly’and worked on a new constitution. In the end, they approved this new constitution. The reason why the National Constituent Assembly wanted a new constitution is because they wanted a constitutional monarch, separation of powers and limited male suffrage.
