During the 2 and 3 of May, 1808, Goya has declared against the War of Independence in Madrid, protesting the horrors of the war and criticising the war.

Goya has decided to start two paintings against the war. In his paint of the 2 of May he will represent the revolt of the people in Madrid who attacked the Mamelukes, Turkish soldiers of the French army of Napoleon, with knives, who took the smaller children of Charles IV and Maria Luisa to France.

The painting about the 3 of May will be dedicated to the executions of patriots of Madrid by the army of Napoleon are contemplated, in reprisal to the rise of the 2 of May against the French occupation.
