Glorious revolution in Spain
Revolution in Cádiz!
The overthrow of Isabel II from the throne
The Glorious Revolution had been supported by major cities in Spain. Isabel was forced into exile. A provisional goverment established, and a new political period is going
to begin, the Democratic Sexenium.
The uprising broke out in September 1868. Initiated by the unionist Admiral Topete in Cádiz, the military pronouncement was quickly joined by popular uprisings in various areas of the country. Isabel II fled to France.
Isabel II of Spain was born in Madrid 1830. She was the daughter of Fernando VII and María Christina. Isabel II was sworn in as princess of Asturias in 1833, and proclaimed queen when her father died that same year. His uncle Charles VII did not recognize the legitimacy of this succession, claiming his right to the Throne by virtue of the previous legislation and unleashing with this attitude the First Carlist War.
On the 19th, after the arrival from the Canary Islands of General Serrano and the rest of the committed Unionist generals, Topete read a manifesto written by the unionist writer Adelardo López de Ayala in which the pronouncement was justified and ended with a shout - «¡Viva España con honor! "- that would become famous.
The Great revolution forced Isabel II to go into exile to France.
