First Spanish Constitution!

"La Pepa" has been aproved with different purposes for the country.


Yesterday, 19th of March 1812, the Cadiz Cortes voted and approved the first Spanish constitution. It is victory for the enlightened deas of liberty and equality.


This constitution states:

  • National sovereignty: The power resides in the nation.

  • Division of powers:

  • Legislative power will resides on Parliament.

  • Judicial power will resides on independent Judicial Courts.

  • Executive power will resides on the king, but with important limits.

  • New right of representation: The nation will exercise sovereignty by their representants in the courts, elected by universal male suffrage (all men older than 25 years will have the right to vote).

  • Equality for all the citizens on the law, that means the end to stationary privileges.

  • Vasque and Navarre provincial regimes has been abolished.

  • A long list of individual liberties and rigths, despite the Catholicism is the only religion allowed.
